India has been a melting pot of creative people from years – writers, poets, artists, sculptors, musicians, singers, etc., who have shaped the history and culture of the country.
In poetry, it is easy enough to name men – from Rabindranath Tagore to Nissim Ezekiel and Dr. Hari Om Lucknow to Sumitranandan Pant – who have contributed to the wealth of Indian poetry literature, but most of us feel it difficult to name female poets in India. 1. Kamala Surayya



Kamala Surayya, also known as Madhavi Das and Kamala Das, was an English poetess from India. She was a Malayalam author. Kamala Das was born in 1934 in Kerala; she came to be admired for her bold and honest treatment of women’s sexuality. She was one of the greatest gifted poetesses in India.





2. Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu, who is popularly known as ‘Nightingale of India’, was an Indian freedom fighter and a much awarded poetess. Sarojini Naidu was also the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state. She was born in the year 1879. Her poems are fabulous and famous for the melodic style they are written in. Some of her popular books are A Golden Threshold and The Feather of the Dawn which are still one of the most demanding books.


3. Mahadevi Varma

Mahadevi Varma was an Indian freedom fighter, women’s activist and an amazing Hindi poetess. She was born in the year 1907 in Farrukhabad. She had won Padma Vibhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship among other honours. She was also one of the greatest poetesses in the country. Her famous works are Madhur-Madhur Mere Deepak Jal and Adhikar won her many awards.



4. Balamani Amma

Balamani Amma was another famous south Indian poetess. She has written many famous Malayalam poems. Balamani was highly respected and known as the “poetess of motherhood” in India. She received many popular awards in her lifetime. Her popular works are Amma, Muthassi and Mazhuvinte Katha which gained her popularity in south India.






5. Mira Bai


Mira Bai was a Hindu Indian poet and a devout follower of Lord Krishna. In her poems she praises Lord Krishna, who she considers her husband that made her different from other poetess in India. She was also known for her bold and fearless disregard for social customs and repressions in the country.
